Update on Little Wekiva River
The Little Wekiva River remains a work in progress- its restoration is a marathon, not a sprint. Seminole County has recently been working to clear large debris that has been impeding flow and navigability in the river, and this is helpful. In the meantime, the County has an ongoing study in collaboration with St. Johns River Water Management District, funded with a recent state appropriation (thank you Senator Brouder), looking at potential areas for a sediment basin that will trap the remaining sediment and enable its removal.
This area remains beautiful even in its chaos and transition and is a critical source of water for the Wekiva River, continuing to the St. John’s River. The Little Wekiva well deserves our continued advocacy and patience for full restoration.
