January 2024 Little Wekiva Remediation Update

Work continues in earnest on the Little Wekiva River remediation. The amount of sediment to be removed that accumulated over the last few years is staggering. Estimates just in the current project area are at least 70,000 tons of white sand/sediment.

As shown in the photos, some of this sand is being used by the Seminole County Contractors to build a road where there was previously a healthy flowing river, such as huge mechanical shovels and dump trucks along with large generators and hoses.

Sediment traps have been put in place to catch additional sediment still flowing downstream and to try to keep the problem contained. Due to the volume of sediment flowing in from upstream, the traps must be emptied every few days.

It is exciting to watch the work knowing that although it will take time, the plan for restoring the river is moving full speed ahead. It is a major undertaking, and we appreciate the hard and expert work that begins every day at sunrise to make this happen.
