March 1, 2026 - Hidden Springs in Seminole State Forest

If you haven't been on the Hidden Springs Tour, you're missing quite the exclusive experience! Participants were led by Dr. Jay Exum, Wildlife Ecologist, and Ralph Risch, Biologist, on a driving and walking journey through some of Seminole State Forest's best-kept secrets.

Much like the rest of the Wekiva Springs Basin, small springs are scattered throughout Seminole State Forest. The group explored several remote springs - Palm, Helen, and Boulder (also known as Bear Cub) Springs - learning about their unique biology and significance to the Wekiva River system. Each one was splendid in its own way. This event is a fan favorite and for good reason! Keep an eye on future calendar announcements so you too can experience these hidden treasures right in our own backyard.

April 24, 2026 - Wekiva Island Earth Day Panal

What better way to celebrate Earth Day than with an EcoTalks Panel featuring some of the brightest local leaders and environmental experts in the state — including our very own FOWR President, Dr. Jay Exum!

The panel, hosted by Wekiva Island, brought together five outstanding voices to explore how land and water choices will shape the future of Florida's natural resources:

  • Dr. Jay Exum — President, FOWR & Principal Ecologist, Exum Associates

  • Lee Constantine — Seminole County City Commissioner

  • Ryan Smart — Executive Director, Florida Springs Council

  • Val Hahn — River Ambassador, Wekiva Wild and Scenic River System

  • Joe Balog — Executive Director, Mighty River Recovery

From sustainable agriculture and land use to water quality and conservation, the discussion covered how these interconnected choices impact the Wekiva River and its Springshed for generations to come. Wekiva Island itself served as the perfect backdrop — a living example of eco-recreation, stewardship, and sustainable enjoyment of Florida's natural environment.
