Summer Update on the Pavilion at Katie’s Landing

Have you visited Katie’s Landing recently?  The once slightly over-grown and “branch-cluttered “ grounds have been transformed into a delightful place to bring your family for a picnic or launch your canoe or kayak. Try sitting on a bench beside the river. Take in the sounds of the birds calling back and forth, spreading their wings as they take flight. Watch the water as it gently flows towards the St. Johns River. Keep your eyes peeled to catch a glimpse of an alligator basking on a marshy island. You will return home with your spirit refreshed!

Friends of the Wekiva River has been working to provide a pavilion for the past several years. Everything is in place, including permitting, and the kit. Construction which will probably not happen until late summer.

However, in the process, good things have come out of the focus on the park. Friends was instrumental in convincing the park service to provide a Park Host on site. Friends supplied the electrical work needed for the host’s camper to be hooked up behind the restrooms.

The host’s presence has helped to keep “visitors’ out after hours.

So far, 2 sets of hosts have lived on site. Both have taken great pride in their work. The bathrooms are kept clean..in fact, the bathhouse has been pressured washed. Debris has been stacked up and removed, the lawn kept mowed and “overgrowth” trimmed.

It’s ready and waiting for the pavilion!

Thanks for all the hard work and being outstanding park hosts, James & Lisa!

The kit will provide the materials to construct a shelter very similar to this sample picture (24’x44’) with the exception of having a white roof to coordinate with the existing bathroom facility at Katie’s Landing. It will be built with laminate wood and have a gable roof. Image by RCP Shelters, Inc
